Heron Hall

August 25

Heron Hall, an ancient estate nestled in the parish of East Horndon, Essex, holds a rich history deeply intertwined with the fortunes of prominent medieval families. For centuries, the manor was the ancestral seat of the Heron family, whose very name is believed to have given rise to the place-name “Herongate” itself, rather than any apocryphal tradition of a heronry. The estate, mentioned as ‘Fyndegod(s)hurne’ in 1232 and ‘Herne’ in 1379, boasted a grand moated site, complete with surviving brick revetting and tower bases, a testament to the considerable wealth and social standing of its early inhabitants.
